Obtained from the wood of the sandalwood tree, sandalwood powder is considered very important in Asia, especially in countries like India. The tree that it is obtained from is native to India, and due to a unique fragrance the powder emits, it finds a place in many religious ceremonies of the country.

Besides its use in religious ceremonies, the powder is also used in alternative medicine practices, like aromatherapy, and as an ingredient in various cosmetic products. It is also antimicrobial in nature, which makes it a good choice for facial skin care.

Being soft, wood from the sandalwood tree is also used in woodworking. In the following paragraphs, we take a look at the various uses that this powder can be put to.

Sandalwood Powder

The wood required for preparing the powder is obtained from the layer present between the inner wood and outer bark. As stated earlier, the powder of this wood is used in the treatment of skin. Our skin faces many problems such as acne, oiliness, suntan, etc., which can be treated with the help of sandalwood powder.

Uses
This powder is mostly used for skin treatment. Common problems such as acne, oily skin, pimples, and wrinkles can be cured with sandalwood.
Acne: A face pack made with sandalwood powder can help cure the problem of acne, if used regularly. This face pack is made by mixing rose water in 2 tablespoons of powder. The pack should be left on the face for about 15 minutes and washed off with cold water. Regular use of this paste should reduce the problem of acne in a gradual manner.
Suntan: The treatment of suntan is carried out by preparing a face pack with the following ingredients: sandalwood, rose water, cucumber and yogurt. All the ingredients need to be mixed together in order to make a face pack. This face pack should be left for 20 minutes and then washed off.
Oily Skin Treatment: The treatment of oily skin is possible by means of sandalwood. Just like the above mentioned procedures, a face pack should be used to reduce the oiliness. One can also think about adding tomato juice to sandalwood powder. A face mask made with these ingredients needs to be applied on the face for 15 minutes and then washed off.
Red Sandalwood Powder
Red sandalwood is referred to by the name Rakta Chandana in India, and is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicines. It has antiseptic properties and is, therefore, used in wound-healing. Acne treatment is another use of red sandalwood powder. A detoxifying facial can be prepared by mixing clay mud and Ashwagandha with this powder. It is also used to give maroon color to soaps. The proportion of this powder for every pound of soap needs to be 1 teaspoon.

Where to Buy Sandalwood Powder?
Sandalwood powder is available in stores that sell organic and natural products. However, it is also possible to find this powder online. One should check whether the products one purchases are authentic and contain pure sandalwood. Adulterated/impure powders do not produce the desired effect in treatment of skin problems mentioned above. It is advisable to read the reviews of sandalwood powder products carefully. A comparative study of companies offering these products should also prove to be useful.

Unlike its white sandalwood counterpart, this tree is not aromatic and usually comes with a reddish tinge when pulped and pulverized. What makes a red sandalwood tree truly unique is that it will take several hundred years to grow in thickness with its ultra dense element usually make it sink when placed in water. To preserve its color, however, one must store it in a cool dry place and away from direct sunlight.

Extract.Though oil can be extracted by pressing the inner bark of the red sandalwood tree using water or alcohol, most of the extracted product available in the market is in powder form. Today, red sandalwood has diminished in terms of supply due to certain regulations that place this tree among the endangered species list as they take hundreds of years to grow.Buying Red Sandalwood vs. White Sandalwood

Both red and white sandalwood possess equally effective elements that help nourish the skin and the body. When buying either red or white sandalwood however, it might be easily observed that the latter is more available in the market and in different varieties. Red sandalwood, due to certain regulatory issues, has been diminishing in supply as such it is considered more expensive than the white variety. When buying white sandalwood, however, it is also important to note that the East Indian sandalwood has a distinctive aroma than the Coastal and Australian sandalwood varieties. Whichever the case maybe in the plight to weigh in between red sandalwood vs. white sandalwood, one thing remains the samea user gets to enjoy both aesthetic and medicinal quality that trump down other synthetic products in the market today.

the sandalwood ("chandan" in hindi) is used in worships and religious occasions from ancient times. Most commonly it is used as a paste. The paste is obtained by rubbing a piece of sandalwood on a round granite slab and slowly adding water to it. This special purpose slab is called "chanouta" in hindi. The paste thus obtained is used by devotees themselves and offered to gods during worship. Devotees apply it on the forehead and the earlobes (in shape according to their sects). For example "vaishnavas" (devotees of vishnu) make a trident like shape on the forehead while "shaivas" (devotees of shiva) make three parallel lines. Same is with gods vishnu and shiva. Almost all gods like sandalwood due to its aroma which is considered divine. It is said to be helpful during the meditation and enhance concentration. Thus brings closer to divinity.

templesmanage to get enoughsandalwoodfor their dailyusessuch as making sandal pastes etc. If they do not get it from the forest.the sandal paste is the main sacred 'prasadam' at many keralatemplesand the demand forsandalwoodfor thispurposehas been increasing.an ancient buddhist scripture states: "none but the mali mountains contain sandalwood.

there is a story related to god krishna and his likeness for "chandan" in the holy hindu book "srimadbhagawatpurana" written by maharishi ved vyas. Krishna is invited to mathura by his wicked uncle king "kansa". Krishna and his elder brother balarama were walking on the street of mathura when they saw a woman with hump on her back coming with a "thal"(plate) of sandalwood paste. She could not walk erect and people called her "kubdi". But krishna addressed her as "sundari" (beautiful woman) and asked to her where was she going. She answered that the "chandan" was for king "kansa" and she was going to his palace as a daily routine. But she was so impressed by the two brothers that she expressed her wish to apply sandalwood paste to foreheads of them. They happily agreed. She fulfilled her wish and asked krishna why had he called her"sundari" (beautiful woman) while she was bent and could not walk erect. Everybody called her as "kubdi". Krishna laughed and said that she was really beautiful - thus saying he pressed her feet with his feet and holding her shoulder with one hand gave her chin an upward jolt with his other hand. And a miracle happened ! her hump was gone and she was erect. She was overwhelmed with joy and thanked krishna.

one of the oldest incense materials, sandalwood has been in use for at least 4, 000 years. It is one of the most calming incenses and therefore is one of the preferred ones for meditation. It calms the mind, enhances mental clarity, and aids in the opening of the third eye. The aroma increases devotion and combined properly can help transmute energy for those who are practicing celibacy. Many ancient temples and accessories such as rosaries and staffs are made from this wood.
if you've read the many statements about sandalwood, you are familiar with the general opinion that sandalwood, other than mysore sandalwood, is generally considered "inferior." this is a somewhat deceiving statement. Several woods and oils are sold as sandalwood which are entirely different species altogether.
the sandal tree does very well on its own, and seems to appear in places it was never seen before. However all attempts by man to proliferate and increase the growth of the species have yielded declining plant populations. It appears very resistant to manipulation!
many people feel that no essential oil produced from any sandalwood tree (even mysore) has the same psychotropic, emotional, spiritual, or medicinal benefits that we find in the wood powder or incense burning that is centuries old. Ayurvedic healers either used powdered sandalwood or the burning of sandalwood in their ancient practice. Essential oils and attars may have also been used in indian medicine, but were popularized in the west by the perfume industry and so became applied medicinally in the western world after the 1920's by french aromatherapists.

It is then applied to him as "tripunda" during his "shringar" (decoration of diety).the name of "chandana" also comes in "lingashtakam" (the eightshlokaprayer of 'linga') as below :- sandalwood has many other uses. Due to its fine grained wood, it is carved to make idols of gods or things of art. Sandalwood oil is also obtained from sandalwood. It has some medicinal properties. It is used in making ofincensesticks. A huge demand in india is from"gutkha" industry. Due totheheavy demand and high market rate it has been exploited on a large scale legally and illegally. Jungles of south india has seen many smugglers of sandalwood one of whom waslegendary"veerappan". one of its qualities is the scent in the wood remains intact till decades to come. Though it can grow even in north india but it hardly can be saved from criminals. It is like having a tree of gold in one's backyard. Another problem is that its tree is hemiparasitic. Means it can grow to some height initially by itself but when grown up it needs a type of host plant nearby from which roots it gets mineral and water to sustain, grow and compete.

Thus brings closer to divinity.

there is a story related to god krishna and his likeness for "chandan" in the holy hindu book "srimadbhagawatpurana" written by maharishi ved vyas.
