Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is a by-product from the blast-furnaces used to make iron. Blast furnaces are fed with controlled mixture of iron-ore, coke and limestone, and operated at a temperature of about 1, 500C. When iron-ore, coke and limestone melt in the blast furnace, two products are producedmolten iron, and molten slag. The molten slag is lighter and floats on the top of the molten iron. The molten slag comprises mostly silicates and alumina from the original iron ore, combined with some oxides from the limestone. The process of granulating the slag involves cooling of molten slag through high-pressure water jets. This rapidly quenches the slag and forms granular particles generally not bigger than 5 mm. The rapid cooling prevents the formation of larger crystals, and the resulting granular material comprises around 95% non-crystalline calcium-alumino silicates. The granulated slag is further processed by drying and then grinding in a vertical roller mill/rotating ball mill to a very fine powder, which is GGBS.

Refractory Materials :
Refractories are heat-resistant materials that constitute the linings for high-temperature furnaces and reactors and must be able to withstand high temperatures, mechanical wear, thermal shock and chemical corrosion. Kyanite is used in refractories sometimes in raw form and mostly in calcined form.
1. Raw kyanite: Kyanite has high expansion coefficient. Moreover, its calcination into mullite is also accompanied by a significant expansion in volume (20%). Raw kyanite as a refractory material is thus particularly beneficial when shrinkage from other materials and binders needs to be compensated for.

Silent Features of sodium feldspar :
In ceramic bodies, the main vitrifying (fluxing) agent is Sodium feldspar. The majority of white ware bodies contain good proportions of sodium feldspar. It acts as a flux. In the ceramic industry, the flux is defined as that portion of the body which develops glass phase. This is provided mostly by feldspar. The amount of flux in a ceramic body should be only in such a proportion as to develop the desired amount of vitrification. If excess of flux is added, the fired body becomes very glassy and consequently, brittle.
Applications of sodium feldspar :
The glass and ceramic industries are the major consumers of Sodium feldspar and account for 95% of the total consumption.
Sodium Feldspar is generally used in making the body composition of several types of porcelain, china and earthenware and also in the preparation of glazes and enamel. Sodium feldspar is also used as an important ingredient in the glass sand batch. Sodium feldspar Used as a bonding agent in the manufacture of bonded abrasives like wheels and discs of garnet, corundum, emery etc.

How do you identify bauxite?
