The common cold (also known as nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis, acute coryza, head cold, or simply cold) is mostly accompanied with cough and can be quite an uneasy condition to deal with. It is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract- the nose and throat. It can be caused due to some allergic disorders, weak immune system or sometimes due to changes in the weather. It can be spread from an infected person to another through direct contact like sneezing, hand-shaking etc. According to ayurveda, common cough and cold are caused by aggravation of kapha dosha. It is also caused by poor digestion. When the food we eat is not fully digested it changes into ama. When this mucus or ama, reaches the respiratory tract, it causes cold or a cough. Other causes are exposure to cold or humid conditions, cold air, lungs irritants and air pollutants. Sign and symptoms: other than rhinovirus, there are more than 200 types of viruses that can cause a common cold therefore; the signs and symptoms of common cold tend to vary greatly. The sign and symptoms usually appear about 1-3 days after the exposure to a cold-causing virus and last for about 2 to 14 days. The symptoms generally include: in normal cases- constant sneezingblocked or a runny nosein severe cases- sore or itchy throatwatery eyesmild feverdry coughslight body aches or a mild headachechest congestionprecautions: avoid cold drinks, ice creams, sweets, fried foods, bananas and milk products like cheese, creams etc.Be neutral with the body metabolism. Neither skip your meals nor overeat.Eat fresh and well-cooked food.Start your day with two glasses of warm water.Fasting is helpful as it boosts the immunity and fights the negative effects of aging to the immune system.Eat a timely lunch and an early dinner for good digestion.Sleep on time.
