Hanger bolts are studs used to suspend objects from or attach items to wood. Like a typical stud, they have threads at each endlag threads to screw into wood but, at the other end, machine threads to accept a nut or thread into an internally threaded (tapped) hole. Coupling nuts and threaded rod are often used with hanger bolts to suspend electrical conduits, junction/pull boxes, fixtures and sheet metal. The furniture industry uses them with corner brackets, clinch nut plates, tee nuts and whenever wood and machine threads are needed in a single fastener. Hanger bolts are also known as:couch bolts, headless hanger bolts, hanger screws.

Being headless, a little ingenuity is needed to drive them into woodsee below for a few installation tips.

Hanger Bolt, Fully ThreadedThreads are standard right-hand. The machine threads are Unified inch coarse series (UNC, Unified National Coarse) and the lag threaded portion has coarse, widely spaced threads that end in a tapered blunt point designed to start threading into a properly sized pilot hole. Plain center style has an unthreaded body section; fully threaded types, also called closed center, do not have an unthreaded section. Measure length from end to end.

Common sizes are 8-32, 10-24, 1/4-20, 5/16-18 and 3/8-16 and lengths range from 3/4" to 6". The number of threads per inch (32, 24, 20, etc.) refers to the machine threaded end.

Since hanger bolts are headless, use a driver tool to install. If a tool isn't available, you have several options.

Method 1: Double nutthread two nuts onto the hanger bolt and tighten (jam) them together, then drive the outer hex nut. Although this technique works with all sizes, use double nuts and a socket wrench to drive 1/2-13 hanger bolts, which require much higher torque to install than smaller sizes. Method 2: You can drive small sizes using a cap (acorn) nut. Be sure to use a solid metal nut rather than a hollow Palnut type cap nut. Method 3: On plain center style, use locking pliers. Pliers can also be used on fully threaded hanger bolts but be certain to grip the threads in an area that won't be used because thread damage is likely to occur. Method 4: Make a driver tool by cutting the head off a hex socket head shoulder screw that has, say, a 1" long shoulder, and thread it into a coupling nut. The shoulder of the shoulder screw is then inserted into a drill/driver. (Naturally, the threads of the driver item(s) you choose to use must match the machine threads of the hanger bolt.)

Steel is a common material. Plain finish, which lacks a surface treatment to inhibit rust, and zinc plated are the usual finishes.

Hanger bolts require predrilled, full-depth pilot holes to ensure maximum withdrawal resistance; hole size is based on bolt size and wood density, as suggested in Table 1.

What is Stove Bolts

A stove bolt is a type of metal fastener that is available in a variety of sizes and materials. A stove bolt is a type of machine screw, which means that it has a metal shaft that does not taper is threaded along its entire length. A stove bolt, like other machine screws, is most often used to hold pieces of metal together. Stove bolts acquired their name, in fact, because they were originally used to fasten the metal portions of stoves together. The end of the shaft of a stove bolt is flat.

Stove bolts generally have heads that are either flat and slightly tapered on the bottom, which means that they can be countersunk, or they are rounded on the top and flat on the bottom. The head of a stove bolt is generally slotted for use with a standard screwdriver, although some stove bolts do use Phillips heads. A stove bolt can be fastened with either a square or hex nut, and in some cases, a lock washer is used to ensure that the nut remains firmly in place.

Stove Bolts

Stove Bolts: Stove bolts aren't just for stoves; they are quite versatile and can be used for almost any fastening job. They are available in a wide range of sizes, have a slotted head - flat, oval, or round, like screws and are driven with a screwdriver or tightened into place with a nut and wrench. Most stove bolts are completely threaded, but the larger ones may have a smooth shank near the bolt head. Stove bolts are coarse-threaded and are available in diameters from 532 to 1/2 inch and lengths from 3/8 inch to 6 inches.

Threads are standard right-hand and Unified inch coarse series (UNC, Unified National Coarse). Short lengths are fully threaded while very long lengths may be partially threaded. The point is usually a plain sheared end.

Typical stove bolt sizes are 1/8" (which is a 6-32 screw size), 5/32" (8-32), 3/16" (10-24), 1/4-20, 5/16-18 and 3/8-16. Lengths range from about 3/8" to 6". Measure the length of a flat head screw from the top of the head to the threaded end of the bolt; measure round heads from under the head.

Drive style is slotted and head style is flat countersunk and round head. The head angle (conical bearing surface) of flat heads is 82. Table 1 lists head diameter and height of flat heads and round heads are listed in Table 2.

Steel, zinc plated, is the most common material and finish (long ago, unplated steel may have been an option).

When installing stove bolts in wood, use a large diameter washer under the nut and round heads to distribute clamping force over a larger area and minimize compression of the wood. Use an 82 countersink to create a countersunk recess (a beveled opening) for flat heads. The body diameter of the countersink should be equal to or greater than the head diameter to ensure that a uniform

There are three grades 36, 55, and 105 designate the minimum yield strength (ksi) of the anchor bolt under ASTM F1554 Specification. Because they are used with wood, round head bolts are rarely high strength and virtually always supplied in a standard ASTM A307 specification.

Countersunk bolts are used when a smooth surface is required.
