Markets served include:
The unique combination of excellent electrical insulation and thermal conductivity makes BN very useful as a heat sink in high power electronic applications. Its properties compare favorably with beryllium oxide, aluminum oxide and other electronic packaging materials, yet is easier to form and finish.
High Temperature Environments.
Temperature stability and excellent resistance to thermal shock makes BN the material of choice in the toughest high temperature environments such as equipment for plasma arc welding, diffusion source wafers, and semiconductor crystal growth equipment & processing.
Molten Metal Handling
BN is inorganic, inert, nonreactive with halide salts and reagents, and is not wet by most molten metals and slags. These characteristics, combined with low thermal expansion, make it ideal for interface materials used in various molten metal processes.

Momentive Performance Materials boron nitride (BN) composites incorporate proprietary compositions with other refractory materials and are excellent candidates to consider for harsh environments such as non- ferrous molten metal applications.
Know more About ProductContinuous casting is one of the most common metal manufacturing technologies. The liquid metal flows from a tundish into the mold, in which the strand shell is formed. The metal strand is then taken off continuously or intermittently, at a speed and solidification rate appropriate to the particular alloy.
The ceramic break ring or the nozzle comes into contact with both the melt and the solidified alloy, and must satisfy correspondingly strict requirements:
Boron Nitride Rings are extensively used in the Industry. Momentive offers a group of different boron nitride materials and boron nitride composites that are matched to different metal alloys. From these materials, manufacture nozzles or break rings that increase the lifetimes for the following metals:

Pyrolytic Graphite (PG) is a unique form of graphite manufac- tured by decomposition of hydrocarbon gas at very high tem- perature in a vacuum furnace. The result is an ultra-pure product which is near theoretical density and extremely anisotro- pic. As an example, PG exhibits thermal conductivity consistent with the best conductors in the "ab" plane and lower than alumina brick in the "c" direction. Mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties are generally far superior to conventional graphites.
PG is available as plate and as an impermeable coating on graphite and other substrates.
Features
Applications
PBN/PG "printed circuit" heaters utilize PBN as an insulating substrate and PG as the resistive element. In non-oxidizing environments, this combination of unique materials delivers performance advantages not available in conventional thermal systems.
Know more About ProductPotential applications for pyrolytic boron nitride include:
Momentive graphite Monochromators are highly oriented forms of high purity pyrolytic graphite (PG) which diffract x-rays and neutrons with greater efficiency than any other material. In x-ray analysis, intensity is increased 3 to 5 times over that obtained with conventionally used crystals. A singly-bent focusing Monochromator using graphite yields 3 times the intensity of lithium fluoride at equivalent resolution. Momentive originally introduced, and still offers, graphite Monochromotors with the lowest mosaic spread available.
Graphite monochromators from Momentive Performance Materials are highly-oreinted forms of high-purity pyrolytic graphite that may diffract x-rays and neutrons with great efficiency.A singly-bent focusing monochromator using graphite may yield 3 times the intensity of lithium fluoride at equivalent resolution. Graphite monochromators from Momentive Performance Materials may provide the lowest mosaic spread available.
In x-ray analysis, they provide
HOPG plates are flat, singly-bent, and doubly-bent shapes and are classified according to mosaic spread.
Momentive EPC is a water-based Boron Nitride coating with small inorganic binders. This suspension is primarily used in Aluminum Castings and metallizing plants, where it serves as a brushed-on release agent to control the deposition of metal and allow metallic deposits to be easily removed from components. Despite the minimal use of binders, BN EPC Grade has sufficiently high adhesive properties to maintain coating integrity during the metalising process.
EPC Grade Boron Nitride Coatings are temperature resistant up to around 850 C in air and to around 2, 000 C in an inert atmosphere. The coating has good thermal conductivity and is electrically insulating.

Advantages
Titanium Diboride (TiB2) is produced by Momentive using a continuous chemical process that controls stoichiometry and particle size to create high purity powders with consistent properties. TiB2 ceramics combine superior hardness and corrosion resistance with a high melting point (>2900C) and good oxidation resistance to 1000C.
Capable of providing exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity with flat, plate-shaped particles, titanium diboride powders are designed to boost thermal conductivity when used as a filler in polymeric matrices. Formulated for superior chemical resistance, titanium diboride powders do not react to molten, nonferrous metals (like Cu, Zn and Al), which enables them to be used as crucibles, vacuum metallization components and electrodes in the processing of those nonferrous materials. Titanium diboride powders can be easily hot-pressed into customized shapes and forms, which may also be engineered to meet tight tolerances and complex patterns, under certain conditions.
Nearly as hard as diamonds when sintered, TiB2 is tough enough to be used as military armor and is a valuable addition to improve the fracture toughness of ceramic cutting tools and other components.
Excellent conductivity of both electricity and heat makes TiB2 valuable in electronic and specialty applications. Its flat, plate-shaped particles also enhance thermal conductivity when used as a filler in polymeric matrices.
Titanium Diboride will not react with molten, nonferrous metals including Cu, Zn and Al. This enables TiB2 to be used as crucibles, vacuum metallization components and electrodes when processing these materials.
Titanium Diboride powders may typically be hot-pressed or HIP'd into desired shapes. Electrical conductivity also enables these ceramic forms to be fabricated into close tolerance, complex shapes using EDM techniques.
Produced in more than 70 standard and custom grades, boron nitride (BN) powders, in platelet and agglomerate forms, meet a wide variety of application needs. Designed to perform, BN powder platelets and agglomerates demonstrate excellent electrical insulator properties, along with a low dielectric constant. Nonwetting to most metals, BN powder platelets and agglomerates are also inert and chemically stable, ensuring stability across multiple formulation types.
BN powder platelets and agglomerates may help to work as electrically insulating and thermally conductive fillers for use in heaters, polymer matrices, adhesives and pastes, and with potting compounds. Offering enhanced lubricity and thermal properties, they can also be used in lubrication applications that require extreme heat, cold or pressure, such as in vacuum environments or when exposed to harsh chemicals.
Several grades of BN powder platelets and agglomerates carry NSF H-2, HX-2 and HX-1 designations, indicating they are safe for incidental food contact.
General Characteristics of BN
For Use in:
Precise and reliable temperature measurement is a critical requirement in any casting process. For example, the automotive industry increasingly requires suppliers to limit temperature deviations to no more than five degrees Celsius from the specified values. Thermocouples must therefore be protected by a material with a high thermal conductivity, high strength and good thermal shock resistance. CN 995 silicon nitride provides all these material properties. The material has such high strength that the wall thickness of the thermocouple protection tubes can be minimized. This is essential to detect even tiny temperature differences and permit an effective automatic control loop.
