This is a variable speed dynamometer, capable of both motoring and absorption duty. In case of absorption duty, the power absorbed by the prime mover under test is absorbed in the load bank. The load control is obtained partly by armature control (coarse) and partly by field control (fine). For motoring duty, a variable voltage D. C. Power source is required. Speed control is obtained partly by voltage control (coarse) and partly by field control (fine).

This is a single phase or three phase alternator, of special design, depending upon its capacity and application.The power developed by the prime mover is absorbed in a load bank.

APPLICATION
AC Absorption dynamometers are ideally suited for testing petrol engines for mopeds and electrical F.H.P. motors. Their main advantage lies in the fact that they are self aircooled and hence water cooling or additional air cooling is not required. This advantage is particularly significant in case of moped engines and F.H.P.

Eddy current dynamometer is the latest type of absorption dynamometer popularly used for testing prime movers like diesel engines, petrol engines, electric motors, pneumatic motors, etc. These dynamometers offer good accuracy and excellent stability. Eddy current dynamometers offer excellent control response to electronic controller. The present trend in industry is to replace hydraulic dynamometers with eddy current dynamometers.
