Soybean meal is used primarily as a protein source in animal feeds for the production of poultry, pork, milk, butter, and eggs. A small proportion of the meal is used to make defatted soy flour, soy protein concentrates and isolates, and textured soy protein products.Raw soy retards the growth of chickens, contains enzyme inhibitors and causes nutritional deficiencies in chickens. Chickens who eat a soy and corn based dietdo not absorb manganese well. Chickens that are fed isolated soybean protein will have iron deficiencies and need to be given iron supplements.Soybean meal is usually classified for marketing by its crude protein content. There are two main categories of soybean meal, the “high-protein” soybean meal with 47-49% protein and 3% crude fiber, obtained from dehulled seeds, and the “conventional" soybean meal, with 43-44% protein, that contain the hulls. Defatted soy flour is a processed product made from finely ground defatted soy meal and contains less than 1 percent oil. It is the base ingredient in soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate and textured soy protein, and contains 50 percent protein by weight. SOYBEAN MILL RUN. Soybean mill run is composed of soybean hulls and such bean meats that adhere to the hulls which results from normal milling operations in the production of dehulled soybean meal. Soybean meal is now a much more common source for protein in fish food. In addition, deer farmers use soybean meal to increase biomass. Unfortunately, soybean crops in the United States fall prey to significant damage by wild deer, raccoons, squirrels, groundhogs, Canada geese, and others.
