PP Box Type Flange Guard

Any process industry consists of a huge piping network. These lines undergo a lot of physical fatigue daily. This sometimes leads to flange failure & cause it to spray out the hazardous chemicals & hot fluids at high pressure which in turn leads to injury of workforce & damage of equipments. To prevent these complications, Flange guards are installed on Flange Joints to contain the spray outs & eliminate any spray related injury or damage.

As you can see in the picture, Box type PP Flange Guards are designed to completely enclose the flanges including the stud bolts & nuts. PP Box Type Flange Guards are made from UV Resistant/Stabilized Polypropylene. UV Stabilization gives enhances the life of these flange guards.

These Box Type Flange Guards are easy to install. A single box flange guard comprises of two equal halves. These halves are placed on the flanges from the opposite sides & are locked with the help of simple bolts on the edges.

The Box Type Plastic Flange Guard is extremely efficient in providing protection spray outs & sudden splashes. These PP Box Type Flange Guards have a three fold built-in safety mechanism which completely dissipates the pressure of splash & provides maximum protection to the working staff & expensive equipment.

1) These guards completely cover the flanges from the sides including the stud bolts. This eliminates the risk of any lateral spray out escaping from the guards. This enclosed setup of the PP Box Type Flange Guards also removes any risk of mist formation.

2) The circular design of the box ensures that the splash smoothly moves around the wall of the flange guard. This helps in gradual & effective reduction of pressure & minimizes & risk of spillage.

3) These PP Box Type Flange Guards can contain & collect liquids up to a certain volume. Leakage from flanges joints carrying combustible fluid lines like oil & fuel lines which are directly placed above hot surfaces & electrical equipment. Is a potential fire hazard. These flange Guards contains the splash & prevents it from dripping on these lines.

Ship Pipeline Safety Flange Guards

SOLAS Regulations

The IMO introduced new regulations concerning oil fuel arrangements through the SOLAS amendments. In particular, regulation 11-2 / 15.2.11 require that-

Oil fuel lines shall be screened or otherwise suitably protected to avoid, as far as possible, oil spray or oil leakages onto hot surfaces, into machinery air intakes or other sources of ignition. The number of joints in such piping systems shall be kept to a minimum.

Valve Spray Shield

Similar to the Valves of the heart, In a piping system also Valves regulates, controls, isolates and directs the flow of the fluid. Valves alone account for almost 10 percent of the cost of total piping system. In ancient times tree branches were used to regulate water. The Roman Empire was unmatchable in early days in controlling and storage of fresh waters. In fact, the castellum was the first water Sewerage system in the historic city of Pompeii.The distribution and regulation of water from the aqueduct through 3 outlets was done by the castellum. Egg shaped Lead Pipe was used in the transportation of water.Unfortunately, theancient city of Pompeii was buried under the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The excavations have led to the finding of bronze valves which were used to pump water uphill to the castellum.

In a Modern piping system Valves alone account for almost 10 percent of the cost of total piping system. Few types of Commonly used Industrial Valves:

  • Ball Valves-Have spherical closure unit which allows flow of fluid when the bore is positioned in the direction of pipeline and closes when bore is perpendicular to the pipeline.
  • Globe Valves- Are use primarily to stop, regulate or throttle the pressure of a fluid. They are linear motion valves and are commonly found in Ships.
  • Gate Valves- Are designed to be fully opened or fully closed. They are not used for regulating pressure of a fluid. Commonly used in water and sewage systems.
  • Butterfly Valves-The Quarter turn rotational motion valves. The Quarter turn provides complete closure or opening of the Valve.
  • Check Valves- Mostly used in the Steam piping systems these valves allow the fluid to pass in one direction and blocking it in the reverse direction.

Most of the Valves leak and spray outs with time and is very common to the industrial setting. Primary reasons being:

1. Cannot be closed due to foreign particles, dust and debris.

2. Seat or the seal of the Valve gets damaged with time.

3. Maintenance failure.

These leakages have been d fined by various standards like API, ANSI, MSS, FCI etc.

Many of the catastrophic accidents in the past have been due to Valve leakages and subsequent splash. Industrial Valves Are regulating devices which at any given time are holding high pressure fluids. Primarily because of two reasons valve leaks are more dangerous compared to Flange leaks:1. PP Flange Guards are safety spray shields manufactured from polypropylene. These flange guards are equipped with multigrip extensions & spacers to easily diffuse high pressure chemical spray outs. These PP Flange guards are used to protect the working staff & equipments from corrosive splashes of chemical & oil piping systems. The installation is very simple with adjustable latching slots.


Polypropylene is a thermoplastic whose invention is contented between Prof Karl Ziegler of Max Planck Institute, Prof. Giulio Natta of Milan polytechnic, Paul hogan & Robert Blanks of Phillips. Polymerising of propylene with catalysts like aluminum alkyl and titanium tetrachloride leads to the formation of Polypropylene(PP).


Polypropylene is low density thermoplastic and enjoys a high melting point of 160 degrees Celsius and above.It has a operating temperature of 125 degree Celsius.
