A.C. electrical motors, and are driven by alternating current, for e.g. the synchronous motor, which always runs at synchronous speed. Here the rotor is an electro - magnet which is magnetically locked with stator rotating magnetic field and rotates with it. The speed of these machines are varied by varying the frequency (f) and number of poles (P), as Ns = 120 fP. In another type of AC motor where rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor conductors, hence circulating current induced in these short circuited rotor conductors. Ht Current Transformer

HT transformers are normally used in High voltage laboratory for extra high voltage testing purpose. This transformer is subjected to transient voltages and surges during their normal operation when the insulation under test breaks down. To withstand these impulse voltages, the insulation of transformer is carefully designed. This High voltage transformer is single phase, core type. This type of transformer is generally oil immersed. Bakelite sheets are used for separating high tension and low tension winding. The high voltage transformers used for HT cable testing purpose are to supply also sufficient electric current and that is why the cooling system of these transformers is very carefully designed. Special cares also to be taken for voltage regulation of transformers.

Welding Generators

Welding power supplies may also use generators or alternators to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Modern designs are usually driven by an internal combustion engine but older machines may use an electric motor to drive an alternator or generator. In this configuration the utility power is converted first into mechanical energy then back into electrical energy to achieve the step-down effect similar to a transformer. Because the output of the generator can be direct current, or even a higher frequency ac current, these older machines can produce DC from AC without any need for rectifiers of any type, or can also be used for implementing formerly-used variations on so-called heliarc (most often now called TIG) welders, where the need for a higher frequency add-on module box is avoided by the alternator simply producing higher frequency ac current directly.
