This standard covers the procedure for determination of content of diffusible hydrogen in deposited weld metal  arising from the use of  Shielded Metal Arc Electrodes,   Gas Metal Arc,   Flux cored Arc , Submerged Arc and MIG wire  Welding  Process by Mercury  method.

MOISTURE TESTING APPARATUS :

• The moisture content of the covering on the Low Hydrogen electrodes shall be determined as per the procedure laid down in SFA-5.1. The apparatus consist of the following :
• Combustion Tube Furnace with heating element to 2000*F (1093*C.)
• An Oxygen purifying train consist of a needle valve, a flow meter, a 96% sulfuric acid wash bottle. A spray trap. And an anhydrous magnesium perchlorate drying tower.
• A fused silica combustion tube and plug of glass wool filter.
• A water absorption train consist of a U- Tube filled with anhydrous magnesium perchlorate and a concentrated sulfuric acid gas-sealing bottle.

Smoke Level Measurement Apparatus is designed and developed as per ANSI/AWS F1.2-92 for measuring Fume Generation Rate and total Fume Emission of welding and allied process.

Fume generation rate depends upon ingredients used in electrode coating, Moisture contents, core wire material, parent material, process and operating conditions during the welding and allied process.

Depend upon the fume generation rate it is useful to provide adequate ventilation, process selections, reformulate the ingredients of electrode and air filtering requirements.

ADVANTAGES :

• Quickly detect fume emission rate of various welding consumables.

• Normal complain by welders at shop floor can be satisfied by Quantitatively measuring of smoke emission rate.

• Regular testing of smoke emission will help in controlling the quality of the product.

• it will help in R& D to develop electrode with low smoke emission rate.
