Special Properties of Gum Rosin: Natural organic compound, mainly composed of resins, possesses chemical activity when dissolved in many organic solvents. Uses of Gum Rosin: At present, most rosin product is used for the manufacturing of paper, paint, soap and printing ink. Since rosin is easily softened and oxidized, in the oil paint industry, the carboxylation reaction of resin acid is usually employed to produce resinate for further use. While in the producing of synthetic rubber and printing ink, resin acid is changed into disproportionate rosin, polymerized rosin, hydrogenated rosin, etc for further use by its double bond reaction. In addition, this can also help disperse the pigment in the rubber and make the product smooth on surface. With 2-6 percent of rosin, rubber will have an increased endurance to laceration and better elasticity. In the synthetic rubber industry, disproportionate rosin potash soap is used as emulsifier in the producing of various product including styrene-butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene rubber. Since 1970’s, rosin used in the synthetic rubber industry accounts for 20% of the total output of colophony in the world. Using disproportionate rosin as an emulsifier, rubber product will improve in cohesion; the endurance to heat will increase for 25%. The endurance to both abrasion and laceration of this rubber is better than ordinary styrene-butadiene rubber. The cohesion will be greatly enhanced if blending with natural rubber. ----- Adhesive Industry ----- Rubber based adhesive, synthetic resin based adhesive and vegetable adhesive all have rosin as one of their ingredients. Rosin based material is generally applicable to hot-melt adhesive, pressure-sensitive adhesive and rubber-based adhesive. The basic ingredients of hot-melt adhesive include paraffin, ethylene-acrylate copolymer and rosin and its derivatives. The main purpose of the rosin ingredients is to enhance the strength, softness and adhesion of the adhesive. Hot-melt adhesive can be used in bookbinding, manufacturing of rubber boots and furniture and packing industry. ----- Papermaking Industry ----- Since for the first time Illig used rosin size together with alum for paper sizing in 1807, papermaking has been one of the largest rosin consuming branches in industry. Sizing agent made from rosin can prevent ink from dispersion, improve the strength and smoothness and enhance abrasion resistant of the paper. It can also prevent paper from absorbing too much water and avoid hair slip while printing. Crystal rosin is not suitable for making rosin size because crystals are difficult for saponification, they might form stains on the paper and jam the pipes in the production of rosin size. ----- Paint Industry ----- Since it’s easily dissolved in alcohol, gasoline, turpentine and other organic dissolvent, rosin is one of the basic ingredients of paints. In the producing of rosin based drying oil, rosin is often changed into resinate and then it is boiled with drying oil (such as China wood oil) with volatile dissolvent added in. Then vehicle, which can be made into enamels if boiling with different pigments, is produced. Rosin is also widely used in road paints. In order to set a certain light-reflection sign in places with heavy traffic such as highway, airport, harbor, etc, a certain thermoplastic paint is often employed to paint on the road as division, boundary, crosswalk and safety zone, so that the driver could identify clearly from far away. This paint is composed of thermoplastic resin, plasticizer, pigment, filling material, light-reflection material and water-displacing agent, etc. Most thermoplastic resin is rosin maleate ester made from the reaction between rosin maleate and polybasic alcohol, and polymerized rosin and disproportionate rosin – polybasic alcohol esters are also possible options. In China, the paint industry is the largest rosin-consuming department. The average consuming rate of paint production is 5-6%. In some places outside China, synthetic resin is now replacing rosin as a raw material for paint producing due to the highly developed petrochemical engineering. While rosin as a natural resin with abundant sources, is easily dried and smooth on its surface. It will continuously be the basic raw material for paint producing. -----Printing Ink Industry ----- In printing ink industry, rosin is mainly used as color carrier of the ink and to increase its adhesion to paper. Without rosin in the ink, the presswork will be blurred. In China, printing ink typically contains about 7% of rosin. In hectograph ink, rosin is often modified by phenol aldehyde to fulfill the requirements that the soften point be between 160 and 175 centigrade and the acid value below 20. In gravure ink, metal resinate is typically used with the properties that the soften point be between 125 and 135 centigrade and the acid value below 95. If we substitute ordinary rosin with polymerized rosin, various sorts of special ink can be produced, such as gasoline printing ink to replace toluene ink, coating ink to replace Cuban gum, hectograph ink to replace bisphenol resin, etc. This will inaugurate many new areas of usage for rosin ----- Soap Industry ----- Because its chemical property is close to aliphatic acid and lower price, rosin is used in soap industry to partially replace aliphatic acid. At present, this replacement is in gradual reduction. ----- Food Industry ----- Hydrogenated rosin-acylglycerol with natural chicle and wax, ethane acetate can be made into chewing gum by adding flavor, sugar and pigment and boiling together. ----- Electric Industry ----- Being an excellent electric insulator, rosin has been used in the producing of cable in China for a long time. Rosin, bakelite and other artificial resin can be blended to immerse electric loop for insulation. ----- Metal Processing ----- Rosin is mainly used as welding flux and polish for metal processing. Rosin is of weak acidity. It can remove the oxidation film on of metals, and slightly etch the metal surface. Therefore, many welding agents contain rosin. Welding agents have strong activation effect on metal surface without eroding. ----- Antiseptic & Germicide ----- Abietylamine acetate can be used to kill algae, bacteria, mildews, mollusks and other pests. ----- Fine Chemicals ----- Abietic acid, the main ingredient of rosin, can be made into a variety of light active and bioactive matters, which have special effects on human body or other organisms.
