The arrangement as shown acts as a self acuating coupler. The valve is spring loaded and normally it keeps the valve pressured against the seat, thus remains closed when the pressure gauge pushed to the coupler the valve remain pressed against spring thus opening the seat & clears the air passage to pressure gauge which will be in operation. Air passed stop on removing the gauge.
