“Red Lady” papaya (Carica papaya) is a high yielding Mexican variety which is very delicious in taste and beneficial for health. It is usually football in shape, that can produce 50 to 120 fruits per plant with an average of 80-100 kilograms, each fruit measuring up to 15 inches long and weighing as much as 2 kilo’s. It takes only 5 months to give fruits and 8-9 months to pluck the fruit from the plant.

Field preparation : Papaya seedlings are planted in pits of 2ft × 2ft size. The pits are prepared 15 days before planting and pit should be filled with top soil along with 5kg farmyard manure 1 kg neem or karanja cake to get tall and vigorous growth. The distance between each papaya plant must be 7x6 or 7x8 feet. There must be 1100 papaya plants per acre. Since papaya does not withstand water logging; a well-drained upland should be selected for its cultivation. Do not grow any other crop with papaya and do not grow papaya with any other crop. After three months of planting, paint the plants with copper sulphate (COC) or lime below the fruits height to get healthy fruits. Apply 100 gm of complete fertilizer (NPK 14:14:14) every 14 days during the growing season for papaya plants younger than 7 months old. Apply 500-750 grams of fertilizer every other month during the growing season for plants older than 7 months. Provide micronutrients according to plant size.

Medicinal uses: It is rich in vitamins A, C, Mg, iron and calcium. it also contain papain, an enzyme that soothes the stomach and aids in the digestion of protein.

Bananas are the most important among the tropical fruits and India is one a major producer of bananas. Thus there are many indigenous cultivars localized mostly in Southern India. With great knowledge about commercially important edible banana cultivars, Nanjanagudu rasabale (one among “Silk” varieties) is being conserved and multiplied by tissue culture method. We took up research task of virus elimination followed by micropropagation resulting in the production of several thousand clonal plants and testing them under field conditions. The tissue culture plants produced good quality fruits and the plants grew without any symptoms of virus infection for over 5-years.
