Sodium carbonate is a white, odorless powder or granule at room temperature. It has water absorption, and gradually absorbs 1mol/L of water (about = 15%) in exposed air. Its hydrates are Na2CO3 H2O, Na2CO3 7H2O and Na2CO3 10H2O. Solubility Sodium carbonate is easily soluble in water and glycerin. At 20 C, 20 grams of sodium carbonate can be dissolved per 100 grams of water, and the maximum solubility is at 35.4 C. 49.7 grams of sodium carbonate can be dissolved in 100 grams of water. The solution is alkaline and can make phenolphthalein red.
