Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing.
The special characteristic of shibori is a soft or blurry-edged pattern. The effect is quite different from the sharp-edged resist obtained with stencil, paste, and wax. With shibori the dyer works in concert with the materials, not in an effort to overcome their limitations but to allow them full expression. And, an element of the unexpected is always present.

Kantha, literally patched-cloth, is a charming textile that seamlessly combines both embroidery and quilting. The crafting of kantha has been a cherished tradition in the Indian state of W. Bengal and the neighbouring country Bangladesh.
Kantha motifs are sourced from a rich living tapestry of beliefs, mythology, nature and everyday life that makes up the life of people. God endearing episodes from the epics;  men and women going about their daily activities as well as celebrating festivals; animals specially elephants,   birds,   fish,   trees,   flowers as well as geometric patterns cheerfully share space on kantha. The central motif on large kantha may often be a lotus, a flower associated with purity and prolific regeneration. The pattern and placement of motifs is completely in the needleworker’s hand, while there is an underlying harmony, symmetry and balance within the composition there is no compulsion to create a mirror image of motifs or a unidirectional embroidered textile. Interestingly, as there is no rigidity of motifs, the needleworker may repeat different versions of the same motif on the kantha. After the motifs are completed, the entire background is filled in with running stitches, passing through all the layers, quilting the textile and creating a beautiful rippled effect. The kantha is broadly divided into different sections: borders (one or more), broad panels on all sides next to the borders and then the central space forms the core of the composition.

Jamdani – also referred to as ‘Embroidery on the loom’, is a time-consuming and labor-intensive form of weaving because of the richness of its motifs, which are created directly on the Hand loom using the discontinuous weft technique.

 

Ginvaani Weaves encourages this skill and has taken up the challenge of reviving the traditional form of Jamdani weaving as well as designing and developing contemporary styles of this beautiful and skillful art in the form of Scarves, Stoles and other varieties.
The main peculiarity of JAMDANI work is the geometric design. The expert weavers do not need to draw the design on paper. They do it from their memory. The weavers develop an occupational identity and take great pride in their heritage; they enjoy social recognition and are highly respected for their skills.

In West Bengal, Chikankari is also a widely practiced embroidery art. Record of the travelers of the sixteenth century describes that during the sixteenth century, white work from Bengal, was influenced by the Portuguese traders, the residents of the port Hugli, north of Kolkata of that time. The Bengali migrants who came from Dacca in eighteenth century to settle in Lucknow brought this art of surface ornamentation to Lucknow. Chikan work came into production by the nineteenth century.
There was one significant difference between chikankari in Bengal and Lucknow. While the first evolved as a major item for trade, the latter was exclusive to royal clientele.
Popular lore states that the origins of this craft of filigreed embroidery can be traced to the Mughal Empress Nur Jahan, who on a visit to Iran was so impressed by the beautiful motifs on the walls of the buildings there, that she ordered them to be copied through embroidery on her garments.

Khadi is a term for handspun and hand-woven cloth made out of cotton which is handspun into yarn on a spinning wheel called a charkha. Khadi is made by thousands of skilled artisans living in rural areas. It is cool, comfortable and truly environment friendly, suitable for all types of season.
Khadi got its importance from Mahatma Gandhi when he revived the 5000 year old process of hand-weaving as part of his movement of freedom fight in 1920's.
