Foam Systems

AUTOMATIC FOAM SPRINKLER SYSTEM FOR HYDROCARBON PLANT

General

Fires on Hydrocarbon are more frequent due to the volatility of the hydrocarbon and its property to not dissolve with water and lighter than water the fire extinguishing of hydrocarbon fire with water is not possible. In case of fire on Hydrocarbon if the water is sprayed, due to the light weight of the hydrocarbon it will float on the water and reignite them to fire and due to the speed of water the fire will travel from one place to other place.

Hence in this case where plant is using hydrocarbon the same should be protected with Foam Sprinkler system designed as per NFPA 16

Foam shall be applied at a minimum density of 6.5 lpm/m2 of the exposed area of the plant.

A minimum pressure of 1.4 bars shall be achieved at the hydraulically remotes sprayer. However, pressure at the hydraulically favorable sprayer shall not exceed 3.5 bars.

The sprayers shall be installed in rows at the ceiling level above the centre of plant floor and spaced at not more than 3M.

Quartzoid Bulb Sprinklers (Q. B. S.) Detection is used to for detection of fire which will be connected to deluge valve for auto operation of the system. Q B Sprinklers shall be of 68 Deg. Or 79 Deg. C depending upon the ambient temperature of the location of the plant.

For foam concentrate (AFFF 3%) the foam tank made out of SS 304 with foam feeding inlet, foam pick up tube, and level indicator shall be provided. The foam concentrate shall be for 10 min. operation of the system.

To mix the foam concentrate in to water foam inline inductor is provided near the foam tank. The inductor of suitable capacity shall be provided downstream of the deluge valve such a way that when water will flow from the inductor it will induce foam concentrate from tank in water stream.

Operation Details of Foam System

In case of fire the Quartzoid Bulb sprinkler shall burst due to heat which allow water in the detection pipe to drain out and in process allow the Deluge valve to open fully. As soon as the Deluge valve opens the water shall flow through the piping and Inline Inductor to induce foam from the foam tank in the water stream to flow water and foam solution to foam sprayer mounted on the ceiling of the plant. At foam sprinklers the foam shall be generated due to air induction and the finished foam shall be gently applied and spread on the fire.

The fire shall be extinguisher since the foam layer shall blanket the fire and cut the contact with air to fire. Due to the foam application fire of hydrocarbon, oil, paints etc. shall be extinguisher completely.

The indication of operation of the system shall be available on the control panel with Alarming Siren.

Advantages of Foam Spray System

  • Entire area is flooded with foam, hence very useful for fire fighting in hazardous area, plant, storage tanks, etc. where manual approach is difficult.
  • Very quick in response.
  • The fire losses is kept low as the area under fire get foam blanket and also cooling due to water contain and so chances of spreading fire is negligible.
  • Complete fire extinguishing without person involvement is possible with this system.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Automatic Sprinkler

The automatic sprinkler consists of assembly of a liquid filled glass bulb fitted in brass or bronze yoke with an deflector at outlet and threaded inlet connection.

The glass bulbs are rated for particular temperature, block the outlet orifice to pressurise the downside of the alarm valve to keep valve closed in normal condition. In case of fire the liquid inside glass bulb expands and shatters the glass bulb to open the orifice and water under pressure starts flowing in the form of spray.

In place of glass bulb fusible metallic string assembly is also used.

Sprinklers are available in various temperature rating and selected on the basis of the temperature of the surrounding where they are to be fixed.

System

The sprinkler system consist of water storage reservoir, a pump of suitable discharge capacity and pressure, normally installed near reservoir and delivery mains taken up to the area under protection in the proper distribution of pipe mains and branches.

There is an isolating valve and a special valve (known as sprinkler alarm valve) on the delivery main near the area under protection. The valve is normally under closed position due to the pressure hold at down stream of the valve by sprinkler bulbs. The pipe branches are properly distributed over the area under protection to which the sprinklers are connected.

Under fire condition the sprinkler bulb burst as the rated temperature arrives and releases the water held by glass bulb. Due to the pressure difference at the seat of alarm valve causes to open the valve to provide water to the sprinkler. As the valve get open it gives alarm with gong connected to the system.

The sprinklers continuously spray water at the seat of fire till the isolating valve is manually closed and reset the alarm valve.

Advantages of Sprinkler System :

  • Being fixed system and automatic in operation, most dependable system.
  • As the sprinklers in fire affected areas only operate, the water damage kept to the minimum.
  • Sprinklers can installed even in concealed spaces, which are difficult to approach (like cable galleries in power station) which is great convenience in case of fire.
  • Substantial reduction in insurance premium hence economical in long run.
  • Very good for exposure protection.
  • Since the response is quick acting the fire lost is minimum.

Disadvantages of Sprinkler System :

  • High capital investment.
  • As the system is automatic in operation it needs thorough maintenance.
  • Not very effective unless entire area is protected.

Fire Hydrant Systems

This is very effective extinguishing system suitable for various plants and high-rise buildings as well as commercial complexes. The system mainly consists of water storage reservoir (underground or aboveground), pump set, piping ring around the building and terminals in side the building, hydrant valves, hoses, branch pipes with nozzles and hose boxes. On the ring main the hydrant stand posts are provided with hydrant valves.

The system is of two types one is wet riser and other dry riser. The wet riser system is automatic type and dry riser is of manually operable.

In case of fire, the hose can be connected to the hydrant valve with the nozzles at the outlet end and the pump can be started. For automatic operation of the pump the jockey pump is provided which normally pressurise the pipes and as soon as the valve is open and pressure reduces the main pump starts automatically.

With the help of pressure and ample water, the jet from the nozzles can be projected at the base of fire to extinguish completely.

Advantages of Hydrant System :

  • Being fixed installation it is very easy for operation and maintenance.
  • For major fire this is most useful system to control and extinguish since the availability of water and pressure at the base of fire.
  • As the hydrant ring outside building is underground there is no hindrance for vehicles and do not affect due to fire.
  • The other systems such as water spray, sprinkler, foam system can be tapped from this system.
  • If the system is approved by TAC the reduction in the insurance premium is obtained.
