Electronic measurement of the vertical consolidation of soil specimen, using a displacement transducer connected to a precalibrated readoutunit, offers an operator all the advantages of digital display without theerrors which can occur when reading conventional dial gauges.The basic equipment for monitoring a test comprises a readout unitand one transducer module for connection to one consolidation frame.Consolidation is measured by mounting the transducer in the sameposition as a conventional dial gauge. The movement of thetransducer stem acts in exactly the same way as would the dial gaugespindle and is converted into an electrical signal. The signal is thendisplayed in true engineering units on the readout unit. For three gangunit or six gang unit, 3 or 6 transducer modules are used, but thereadout unit is of three or six channel type. The constituents of variousmodels are detailed in the table given on the next page.

The use of the in-situ CBR apparatus in large road constructionprojects has increased considerably in recent years. Soil retention is a predominant function of geotextiles in drainage andfiltering applications. Pore size is the key parameter that controls theability of the geotextile to retain the soil. The Apparent Opening Size(AOS) also called the Equivalent Opening Size (EOS) was developed byUS Army Corps of Engineers for evaluating this property. AOS is thesize of through holes in the geotextiles and provides an index to thesize of the largest opening through the geotextile. In the former test, reinforcement material is placedand clamped in the plane of shear with soil above the fabric, whereasin the later test, the fabric placed between the top and bottom shearboxes is covered on both sides with soil and is then pulled out toevaluate the frictional resistance. This interface friction measurementapparatus has been specially designed to evaluate both 'frictional' aswell as 'pull out resistance' of soil reinforcing materials at a shear rateand drainage condition desired by the designer.

The percentage passing of different fractions determines theporometry of the geotextile investigated. In the Hydrodynamic SievingMethod, the geotextile specimen, loaded with a certain quantity ofglass bead fraction, is continuously rotated in a water trough, forcingthe glass beads to pass through the geotextile openings.The apparatus consists of two test drums of 14 cm dia and 7 cmeffective length with 16 nos. of 4 mm dia rods providedcircumferentially at equal spacing to hold the geotextile specimen inposition. Two troughs to contain the test drums are supported onhorizontal axis, facilitating free rotation and capable of being filled withdistilled water to a level of 20 mm below the drum axis. The clearancebetween the trough and the geotextile could be maintained at about40 mm.The apparatus is provided with a motor drive and a change gearassembly to enable rotation of the drums at a speed of 5 rpm to 30rpm.For conducting the test, the geotextile specimen is cut and stitched toget a shape of 14 cm dia and 10 cm length to insert over the drumtightly, after immersing the specimen in distilled water for one hour, and secured by rubber 'O rings. After placing 50g of smallest sizeglass beads inside the drum, the lid is secured and the drum with thegeotextile placed in distilled water to the desired level and rotated at20 rpm for 1, 500 cycles. In order to get the optimum filtration openingsize, the drum is rotated at a speed of 5 rmp to 30 rpm for 250 to 2, 500revolutions. The percentage of beads passed through the geotextile bydry weight is determined. The test is repeated with increasing size ofglass beads till less than 5% of the beads by weight pass through thegeotextile.

Electronic measurement of the vertical consolidation of soil specimen, using a displacement transducer connected to a precalibrated readoutunit, offers an operator all the advantages of digital display without theerrors which can occur when reading conventional dial gauges.The basic equipment for monitoring a test comprises a readout unitand one transducer module for connection to one consolidation frame.Consolidation is measured by mounting the transducer in the sameposition as a conventional dial gauge. The movement of thetransducer stem acts in exactly the same way as would the dial gaugespindle and is converted into an electrical signal. The signal is thendisplayed in true engineering units on the readout unit. Soil retention is a predominant function of geotextiles in drainage andfiltering applications. Pore size is the key parameter that controls theability of the geotextile to retain the soil. Soil reinforcement is a recent and fast developing technique toimprove soil behaviour for a variety of civil engineering works; e.g.earth retaining structures, slope stability, land slides protectionworks, pavement, etc.In order to utilise fully the strength of reinforcement material whiletransferring load and forces via soil or aggregate to the reinforcement, a correct assessment of the soil/reinforcement frictional relationshipis essential. The frictional properties can be assessed by means of ashear box which is modified either to conduct a 'Modified Shear Test'or 'Pullout Test'. In the former test, reinforcement material is placedand clamped in the plane of shear with soil above the fabric, whereasin the later test, the fabric placed between the top and bottom shearboxes is covered on both sides with soil and is then pulled out toevaluate the frictional resistance. This interface friction measurementapparatus has been specially designed to evaluate both 'frictional' aswell as 'pull out resistance' of soil reinforcing materials at a shear rateand drainage condition desired by the designer.

The percentage passing of different fractions determines theporometry of the geotextile investigated. In the Hydrodynamic SievingMethod, the geotextile specimen, loaded with a certain quantity ofglass bead fraction, is continuously rotated in a water trough, forcingthe glass beads to pass through the geotextile openings.The apparatus consists of two test drums of 14 cm dia and 7 cmeffective length with 16 nos. of 4 mm dia rods providedcircumferentially at equal spacing to hold the geotextile specimen inposition. Two troughs to contain the test drums are supported onhorizontal axis, facilitating free rotation and capable of being filled withdistilled water to a level of 20 mm below the drum axis. The clearancebetween the trough and the geotextile could be maintained at about40 mm.The apparatus is provided with a motor drive and a change gearassembly to enable rotation of the drums at a speed of 5 rpm to 30rpm.For conducting the test, the geotextile specimen is cut and stitched toget a shape of 14 cm dia and 10 cm length to insert over the drumtightly, after immersing the specimen in distilled water for one hour, and secured by rubber 'O rings. After placing 50g of smallest sizeglass beads inside the drum, the lid is secured and the drum with thegeotextile placed in distilled water to the desired level and rotated at20 rpm for 1, 500 cycles. In order to get the optimum filtration openingsize, the drum is rotated at a speed of 5 rmp to 30 rpm for 250 to 2, 500revolutions. The percentage of beads passed through the geotextile bydry weight is determined. The test is repeated with increasing size ofglass beads till less than 5% of the beads by weight pass through thegeotextile.

Soil compaction is a fundamental requirement for theconstruction of earth fill for dams, reservoirs, canalembankments, highways, railways and runways. Therelationship between soil moisture content and compacted drydensity is very useful for deciding construction specificationsand quality control of compacted earthfill. While designing anearth or earth retaining structure, the strength and deformationbehaviour of soil is evaluated by testing soil specimencompacted to the density as would be achieved duringconstructionThe construction quality control is essentially tocheck the density of compacted soil achieved in the field, thereby checking its strength.
