Martindale abrasion tester, To determine resistance to abrasion (wear & tear) or pilling of textiles. Circular specimens of fabric are abraded or moved on a reference abradant under known pressure with a cyclic planar motion in the form of a Lissajous figure. The resistance to abrasion is estimated by the number of cycles to break down or by loss in mass of the specimens. The formation of pills is examined by visual control after a specified number of pill turns.
