Bending tests are widely used for measuring the stiffness modulus and assessing the fatigue resistance of asphaltic paving materials. Four point bending tests are included in CEN, AASHTO and Chinese test specifi cations. The specimen is a prismatic beam which is subjected to sinusoidal loading in either the controlled strain or controlled stress modes. This equipment is capable of testing over a wider frequency range (up to 60 Hz) than can be achieved with pneumatic loading systems.
The CRT-LH4PT-BB uses advanced servo-hydraulic technology and a high-speed digital data acquisition and control system together with user-friendly software. During testing both graphical and tabular data are displayed on screen and test data is stored to disc in Microsoft Excel compatible format. The test frame is housed in a temperature controlled cabinet with fan-assisted air circulation and a temperature range of -20 to 30C. The unique constant torque clamping and three-transducer defl ection measurement system of the CRT-LH4PT-BB can be confi gured to accept different beam sizes. This means that the ratio between beam dimensions and maximum aggregate size of test specimens will satisfy the requirements of the relevant European specifi cations.

Wheel tracking is used to assess the resistance to rutting of asphaltic materials under conditions whichsimulate the effect of traffi c. A loaded wheel tracks a sample under specifi ed conditions of load, speed and temperature while the development of the rut is monitored continuously during the test. Test specimens can be either slabs prepared with a laboratory compactor or 200mm cores cut from the highway.
The CRT-WTEN1 wheel tracker performs both procedures A and B specifi ed for the small scale device in EN 12697-22. Procedure A requires that six specimens are tested. For procedure B only two specimens need to be tested, but rut depth must be measured at more points along the longitudinal rut profi le. To speed up the testing process the CRT-WTEN2 was designed to test two specimens simultaneously.

These muffle furnaces use open coil heating elements on both sides of the heating chamber to allow fast heating with minimal temperature gradient. This energy efficiency is enhanced through the use of high thermal-efficient ceramic insulation surrounding the chamber. The free-floating, ceramic fiber door includes a chamber plug that prevents heat loss around the door by totally sealing when the spring-loaded door is closed.
Electronic single setpoint controls enable you to heat up the muffle furnace to one single setpoint level and hold that setpoint temperature. A programmable control enables you to program up to eight ramps and eight dwell times. Thus you can choose among two chamber sizes and two temperature controllers. The digital single setpoint control features a single ramp to setpoint and a dwell, again with a single display but also with a mechanical Over Temperature Protection relay. The digital programmable control features 4 stored programs with 16 segments per program, along with RS232 communications. This microprocessor control features adjustable over-temperature protection, sensor-break protection, and digital readout of both setpoint and muffle furnace temperature.
A built-in venting system allows easy removal of undesirable contamination and moisture, making this muffle furnace especially suitable for use with sensitive microelectronic components. In addition, a .375 port allows you to purge the chamber with nitrogen or other special atmospheres, thereby enhancing moisture and contamination control; this port can also be used for independent temperature monitoring.
The interior chamber of Model 48000 (only) features built-in racks that allow adjustable positioning of a ceramic shelf (included), which effectively doubles the working area. Comes complete with on/off switch, thermocouple and grounded three-wire cord and plug.
Big Bill Mixer is a heavy-duty orbital shaker for use in determining maximum specific gravity and density of bituminous paving mixtures. Studies have shown that the use of an orbital shaker to agitate the sample within the flask while drawing a vacuum on the sample results in more accurate and unifrom test results. The defined orbit(19 mm), as well as the digitally controlled speed of the shaker allows each lab to perform the test according to the defined procedure and provides reproducibility of the test between individual labs.
Big Bill Mixer, shown by several studies, prevents densification of the bituminous material in the center of the flask. Vibrating shakers can actually promote the densification of the material during the test. The densification can inhibit the extraction of entrapped air within the bituminous mixture.
It can accommodate several samples at the same time. Four 4 liter glass flasks and three metal pycnometers.

3606 PAV vacuum oven is designed for use in the degassing process of the binder material that has been removed from the Pressure Aging Vessel in accordance with AASHTO PP1-98. Immediately following the degassing process, the material can then be tested in the Bending Beam Rheometer, the Dynamic Shear Rheometer or the Direct Tension device. Degassing of the material prior to these tests insures that the material does not contain air bubbles. Entrapped air can compromise the integrity of the binder material, thus causing false failures in the previously mentioned test devices.

Gyratory compaction is considered to be one of the best methods of laboratory compaction for theassessment of compactibility and the manufacture of test specimens.
Compaction is achieved by the application of a vertical stress (normally 600KPa) via end platens to aknown mass of asphaltic mixture within a 100 or 150mm internal mould. The longitudinal axis of themould is rotated (gyrated) at a fi xed angle to the vertical whilst the platens are kept parallel and horizontal.
During compaction the height of the sample is automatically measured and both the mixture density andvoid content calculated. The compaction data is shown on-screen in graphical and tabular format ascompaction progresses and it is also saved in Microsoft Excel compatible format. The operator canchoose whether to compact for a certain number of gyrations or until a target mixture density or voidcontent is achieved.
Problems with existing compactors are mainly related to build quality and ease of use. Unlike mostcompactors 100 and 150mm moulds can be tested without changing machine parts. A fi lled gyratorycompactor mould is heavy and often very hot. In many cases these moulds have to be lifted in and out ofgyratory compactors. With the CRT-GYR-EN no lifting of fi lled moulds is required. They are automaticallylowered into position for compaction and then lifted up again for transfer to the integrated demouldingsystem.

The Roller Compactor is considered to be the method of laboratory specimen compaction that resultsin slabs of asphaltic paving materials with properties that most closely simulate those of materials in the highway. Slabs can be compacted to target mixture densities using loads that are equivalent to those of full-scale compaction equipment.
The CRT-RC2S and CRT-RC2SV are pneumatically powered and controlled by a programmable logiccontroller (PLC) connected to an HMI which the operator can use to select the number of passes andcompaction load levels. Although the primary function is to produce slabs for wheel tracking tests, theslabs can be sawn into beams or cored to provide specimens for a variety of other tests. Users havecompacted hot asphaltic materials over stress absorbing membrane interlayers (SAMIs) on a base ofcracked concrete in order to assess the effectiveness of the SAMI by using shear or bending tests.

Roller compaction is the laboratory method that most closely simulates on-site compaction. The machine can be confi gured to operate with a single or twin wheels depending on the mould size. The wheels track the surface in overlapping wheel-paths using sequences specifi ed in EN 12697-33 or custom sequences designed by the user. The base of the mould is incrementally raised by a precision jacking system and the system is tracked to keep it level with the top of the mould.
Compacted slabs can be from 50 to 150mm thick. 500 x 180mm slabs are usually wheel tracked in theCooper Technology Large Wheel Tracker, whilst 600 x 400mm slabs are normally cut to produce trapezoidal or prismatic specimens for fatigue, modulus tests and Duriez test.

USRADAR offers the means to detect buried objects that are not detectable by other methods. In addition to the ability to locate metallic objects, USRADAR is able to detect nonmetallic objects. The system sends radar pulses into the surface, then it receives and processes the reflected energy. Through advanced processing technology the system calibrates to the dielectric constant of the surrounding material. When the signal is reflected from a material having a different dielectric constant, the signal is displayed on the screen as an anomaly. Depth can also be determined by processing the sampling interval and determining anomaly. Depth can also be determined by processing the sampling interval and determining the size and comparing relative data of other objects detected.
Strain Transducers and Accelerometers manufactured by Pile Dynamics collect the essential data for use with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and SPT Analyzer.
Reliable results start with reliable measurements: The axially accurate strain and acceleration signals collected at high microstrain and g levels are converted by the PDA (or the SPT Analyzer) to force and velocity records. These records are then used in evaluations of foundation capacity, foundation integrity, hammer efficiency and pile driving stresses. Accuracy matters, but so does convenience. PDI sensors are fast and simple to install and remove. With proper care, both accelerometers and strain transducers have a long useful life.
Sensors are quickly bolted to any type of foundation, usually about 2 to 3 diameters below the top. Strain transducers are attached symmetrically to account for bending effects. Accelerometers should be attached near the strain transducers. Attachment is typically performed with drilled and taped holes for steel pipe piles, clearance holes with bolt/nut for steel H piles, lag bolts for timber piles, or by installing embedded anchors for concrete piles and shafts.
