The process of cleaning a reverse osmosis (RO) plant involves several steps, including:
Chemical cleaning: Use high and low pH cleaning chemicals to remove organic and biological impurities. High pH cleaning agents remove calcium that binds foulants and biofilms to the membrane surface. Low pH cleaning may be used before high pH cleaning, but organic contaminants can lose their ionic charge and be pressed into the membrane.
Flushing: Use the backwash flushing method to clear blockages and restore function. Flush from the back (porous support layer) to the front (dense layer) of the membrane.
Visual inspection: Remove the membranes to inspect the housings and membranes for any problems.
Rinsing: Use permeate or good-quality water for rinsing.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a semi permeable membrane to separate ions, unwanted molecules and larger particles from drinking water. Water is forced through these membranes with the use of pressure and force (typically from a pumping system), the usual process of osmosis is reversed via feed water being pushed through the semi-permeable membranes.
