It is part of the Power circuit of the Traction Convertor.
During powering up of the convertor, charging contactor is closed, so that the convertor DC link is pre-charged through the charging resistor and the diodes in the Valve Set.
This is highly compact Braking Resistor. The Resistor is divided into Resistor bank, Blower Motor and Blower. Resistor Bank consists of six resistors tiers connected to six traction motors. Blower is axial flow fan with D.C. Motor. AC Motor is optional. Blower is aluminium alloy die-cast. Blower fixed on the bottom of the under frame and fresh air is sucked in from the lower portion. Top of the resistor bank is matched to the roof of the locomotive and hot air is blown out from the roof top into the atmosphere. This type of Braking Resistor is highly successful and provides maximum braking efforts.
A Power parts with in the Inverter can be damaged as a result of over voltages, power supply failures, or other faults. Therefore, an extensive protection system should be there to reduce the likelihood of damage to the inverter. For this reasons, Each Thyristor Control Cabinet (TCC) is provided with a built in protection system called IPS (Inverter Protection System).
short Hood structure is of fabricated steel body. it houses Grid Blower Motor Assembly and six Resistor Grid Boxes.

The Radial Dynamic Braking Resistors complete with Blower Motor set are required to control the speed of the train on a continuous down gradient as well as on level section.
It consists of a five nos. Non-Fan Tap Radial Grid Resistor and one no. of Fan Tap Radial Grid Resistor mounted on the locomotive. These 6 or 4 Grid Resistor depending upon the requirement those are forced cooled by a D.C. Blower Motor mounted below the radial grid assembly, such that the fresh air is flown through the element assembly.

Forced cool convection method is used for cooling of resistor Grid by a D.C. series Blower Motor. Aluminium Alloy die cast axial flow fan is used for cooling of resistor grid driven by D.C. series blower motor. There are various designs of 4 & 6 grid arrangements are designed as per the power requirements.
