Hydraulic Oils

Hydraulics describe the transfer of energy and signals through fluids; power is transferred to drive, control and move. Hydraulics fluids based on mineral oils, synthetic fluids and fire-resistant fluids are used in all types of machinery and equipment.

Modern hydraulics can be divided into three principle areas: stationary, mobile and aviation hydraulics. Each of these areas makes special demands on its components and the hydraulic medium. The performance of hydraulic systems has increased significantly, which is reflected in higher pressures, higher system temperatures and lower system volumes.

Transmission Fluids

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is the fluid used in vehicles with self shifting or automatic transmissions. It is typically coloured red or green to distinguish it from motor oil and other fluids in the vehicle. On most vehicles its level is checked by a dipstick while the engine is running.

The fluid is optimized for the special requirements of a transmission, such as valve operation, brake band friction and the torque converter as well as gear lubrication.

ATF is also used as a hydraulic fluid in some power assisted steering systems, as a lubricant in some 4WD transfer cases, and in some modern manual transmissions.

Brake Oils

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brake and hydraulic clutch applications in automobiles, motorcycles, light trucks, and some bicycles. It is used to transfer force into pressure, and to amplify braking force. It works because liquids are not appreciably compressible in their natural state the component molecules do not have internal voids and the molecules pack together well, so bulk forces are directly transferred to compress the fluid's chemical bonds.

Most brake fluids used today are glycol-ether based, but mineral oil (Citron/Rolls-Royce liquide hydraulique minral (LHM) and silicone (DOT 5) based fluids are also available.

Brake fluids must meet certain requirements as defined by various standards set by organizations such as the SAE, or local government equivalents. For example, most brake fluid sold in North America is classified by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) under its own ratings such as "DOT 3" and "DOT 4". Their classifications broadly reflect the concerns addressed by the SAE's specifications, but with local details - Alaska and the Azores have different normal temperature and humidity ranges to consider, for example; many countries defer explicitly to the SAE specifications, or simply refer to "best practice" which in application would defer to SAE standard. All approved fluids must be colorless or amber to be acceptable for street use in the U.S, except for DOT 5 silicone, which must be purple.

SPECIALIZED GREASES

Schaeffer Moly EP greases are versatile, multi-purpose extreme pressure aluminum complex base greases that are specially formulated for use in all types of heavy-duty automotive, construction, mining, farming and industrial equipment. Applications exposed to the most adverse conditions, excessive pressure, high shock loading, extreme hot and cold temperatures, extreme contamination and high moisture will benefit from Schaeffer grease formulations.

Incorporated into Schaeffer's blend of synthetic base oils and high viscosity index paraffin base stocks is and aluminum complex thickener designed to resist bleeding and deliver excellent performance in high moisture and extreme temperatures. Further incorporated into the base are two proven friction modifiers: molybdenum disulfide. These friction reducing additives protect the metal surface and provide outstanding resistance to wear. These additives act as "back-stop" lubricants when conditions and loads become severe. Molybdenum disulfide plates to the metal surface to form a long lasting solid lubricant film. This solid lubricant film will withstand pressures up to 500, 000 pounds per square inch, giving the metal surfaces of the bearings the protection they need during periods of high speed, start-up, high shock loads and extreme pressure.
