The IK Code, or impact rating, is an international numeric classification for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts.

It provides a means of specifying the capacity of an enclosure to protect its contents from external impacts. The IK Code is defined in the European Standard EN 62262.

EN 62262 also specifies the way enclosures should be mounted when tests are carried out, the atmospheric conditions that should prevail, the number of impacts (5) and their (even) distribution, and the size, style, material, dimensions etc. of the various types of hammer designed to produce the energy levels required.

What is an IK Rating?

An IK (Impact Protection) rating is a unit used to define the levels of protection an electrical enclosure offers to any contents and assemblies housed inside. This is calculated by measuring the enclosure's protection against external mechanical impacts.

To ensure your components are sufficiently protected, its important to understand the protection level offered from each rating and what IK rating you require for your application. An IK rating varies from 0 10, with IK10 offering the highest level of protection.

IK Rating or Impact Protection (the K is from 'Kinetic' to differentiate from IP rating) is defined in international standards and indicates the level of resistance an electrical enclosure provides against mechanical impact. IK ratings are an important factor when choosing LED lighting which may be fitted in an area that could be subject to rough environment, attempted vandalism or other impacts.

What do the IK Rating Numbers mean?

The numbers that follow the IK have a specific meaning and indicate the level of protection from mechanical impact. It is a 1 to 10 system with a higher number indicating a more robust product able to maintain safety at higher energy impacts.

How do we test for an IK Rating?

By applying the required amount of energy (joules) to the enclosure. We do these standard tests in a controlled environment by 'control dropping' set weights from set heights and angles onto the enclosure. To apply the correct amount of impact energy (joules) we use the specified method in the standard to deliver the energy. Strikes without bouncing are performed three times on the same spot. This test is performed at several locations on each test enclosure, looking for weaknesses, to ensure IK rating is valid for the whole product, not just the tougher bits.

PRINCIPLES

This rating can be decisive in a product selection. It doesnt rate the mechanical life but the capacity of a product to face environmental aggressions.

Therefore it is a key feature for any product intended for consumer goods.

The IK impact resistance is rated through a specific test carried out with a Charpy pendulum impact tester.

This device measures the resistance of a product submitted to 3 repeated identical impacts.

The impact energy (in joules) depends on 2 elements:

The distance between the hammer and the tested sample

The hammer weight

According to the resistance level rated during the test, an IK code is assigned to the product. This code ranging from IK0 to IK10, determines the energy level the product can absorb.

Impact Protection IK Rating (Impact Protection) is a unit used to define levels of protection an electrical enclosure offers to any contents and assemblies housed inside.

IK protection test standard

Usually, the application of IK codes, the degree of protection applies to the overall housing. The IK code IK code code indicates the enclosures level of protection against harmful mechanical collisions. The logo indicates that the enclosure is protected against external mechanical collisions using the IK code as specified below. If the relevant product committee decides to require a mark IK code, the mark requirements shall be specified in detail in its relevant product standards. The product standard shall also stipulate the marking method adopted in the following cases 1. The degree of protection of a certain part of the same shell is different from that of other parts 2. The installation status will affect the level of enclosure protection.

What is IK testing?

The IK rating is an international standard that indicates how resistant a product is to impact. The standard BS EN 62262 relates to IK ratings, to identify the degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts.

Characteristic numbers of IK codes and their definitions

Each set of characteristic numbers represents a collision energy value, the correspondence between the IK code and its corresponding collision energy. In the IEC62262 protection class code, the IK code indicates the protection level of the shell against harmful mechanical collisions to the outside world, and the characteristic number combinations are 01 to 10, i.e. IK01, IK02, IK03, IK04, IK05, IK06, IK07, IK08, IK09 and IK10, collision energy J a 0.14 0. 2 0.35 0.5 0. 7 1 2 5 10 20 In these 10 levels, there are two groups of tests according to different levels of test levels: the first group is spring impact hammer test from IK01, IK02 to IK06, this group test has a smaller energy from 0.14J to 1J The other group is the pendulum test from IK07 IK08 to IK10 which tests with larger energies ranging from 2J to 20J.

For example IK10 vandal rating test refers to the shell impact resistance level of more than 10 that is, the shell can withstand more than 20J energy 5 times, of which the same point can not be impacted more than 4 times, the application of IK code is usually, the protection level is applicable to the overall shell. If some parts of the housing have different degrees of protection, they should be marked with the corresponding degree of protection.

Why are IK Rated products important?

IK Rated products are important especially if they are in public areas, high traffic areas, commercial environments and areas that are prone to vandalism. If a product becomes damaged, this can result in the product failing to work or even failing completely. Damage leads to additional costing to repair or replace, it also leads to the potential need to close areas to access. A broken product may also lead to a hazard especially in public areas, such as leftover debris or lack of required illumination or information.

IK Ratings can be subjective, and this is where the EN 62262 fails as the manufacturer has significant discretion in choosing where the impacts are located. And parts such as hinges and locks are excluded from testing therefore it is important to understand the manufacturers testing procedure as the enclosures IK rating can be affect by where the impacts were applied. Its worth noting that if it has an IK rating it must also meet the equivalent IP rating.

Within the scope of electrical test laboratory services, CDG also provides IK impact protection test services. Thanks to these services, businesses receive more effective, high-performance and quality testing services and provide safe, fast and uninterrupted service to their customers.
