Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor MBBR process is a state-of-the-art fixed-film (or attached growth) biological process used for wastewater treatment both municipally and industrially for BOD removal, nitrification and denitrification.A Moving Bed Biofilm MBBR reactor consists of a tank with submerged but floating plastic (usually HDPE, polyethylene or polypropylene) media having specific gravity less than 1.0. The large surface area of the plastics provide abundant surface for bacterial growth. Biomass grows on the surface as a thin film whose thickness usually varies between 50-300 microns. Medium or coarse bubble diffusers uniformly placed at the bottom of the reactor maintains a dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of > 2.5-3 mg/L for BOD removal. Higher DO concentrations are maintained for nitrification. To retain the media flowing out of the tank, screens are placed on the downstream walls. A clarifier or a DAF is placed downstream of the MBBR tank to separate the biomass and the solids from the wastewater. • Capricarn scale-capture a one shot solution to problems of lime scale and hard water. Water that is naturally hard, as in 70% of india, contains dissolved calcium and other minerals. This effect on pipeline and water systems can be disastrous. When water-borne minerals such as calcium bicarbonate, revert to their solid carbonate state, lime scale is formed in water systems and this narrows pipes, blocks jets, slows the flow, reduces thermal efficiency and provides a breeding ground for bacteria. It is seen just 6 mm lime scale can reduce energy efficiency by a staggering 40% and in a moderately hard water area – 6 mm of lime scale can form in pipe-work or on heat-exchangers in just 2 years. This in turn results in higher running cost. Lots of money wasted in increased energy bills, lost production and early renewal of capital equipments. When water is heated the hard water releases the carbon dioxide reverting the calcium back to its carbonate stage by precipitating hard, ionically charged crystals. These are immediately attracted to the closest surface exhibiting an opposite ionic charge.

• Scale-capture is an electronic descaler that is applied externally to the pipe-work of water system installation. Treatment is applied simply by wrapping a single cable around the outside of a pipe to form a coil. Signal cables wrapped externally around pipes produce square waves alternating at 8000 to 120000 cycles per second. Complex modulated signal field at variable frequency induces electrical field in the hard water ions and increases their solubility and ph value of the water. As you know, the main cause responsible for formation of scales inside any equipment is the rise in temperature of water flowing through it, since at higher temperatures, water has a tendency to precipitate dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. A graphic representation of solubility of these salts in water vis-a-vis its temperature indicates that with the rise in temperature of water from t1 to t2 the solubility of these salts reduces from s1 to s2. Thus with higher temperatures of water - as it comes in contact with any heat exchange surface - calcium and magnesium salts precipitate out and form scale on the surface of heat exchanging area.

• Scale-capture precipitates out these salts much before the water attains this critical temperature comes in contact with the heat exchange surface. These precipitates float in water and goes out of the system along with the water when it is flashed out. water also tends to precipitate out dissolved calcium and magnesium salts at higher ph value, hence a graph plotted for solubility of calcium and magnesium in water vis-a-vis its ph value indicates that with the rise in ph of water from p1 to p2 the solubility of these salts reduces from s1 to s2 causing their precipitation at higher ph values.

• Scale-capture employs above principle and locally enhances the ph of water to precipitate these salts before water actually comes in contact with heat exchange surface. These precipitated salts are suspended in water because of their small size and lighter weight and the turbulent water flowing through scale-capture carries away these precipitated salts. consequently, once the precipitation of these hardness causing salts has taken place, further precipitation due to temperature variation is not possible, the result is a totally scale free system.
