Sand Filters are oldest equipment to be used in water treatment. In this filters sand is used as filtration bed to separate suspended solids from water. The suspended particles in water are trapped inside the bed based on different mechanisms such as direct collision, Vander vals Attraction, Surface Charge attraction and diffusion.
Based on the type of water source and flow requirement, this filters can be configured in down flow or up flow configurations.
ApplicationsIron in water leads to stains on sanitary ware and tiles of buildings, garments. It also clogs RO, UF, Nano membranes. From location to location the concentration of the Iron in water changes. Based on Iron concentration in water, the media and total process to achieve the require reduction needs to altered. Generally green sand media, MgO2, brim media are used for filtration of Iron from water. In some cases chemical dosing, aeration needs to done prior filtration.
AdvantagesBag Filters are used to remove excess loads on membrane filtration units. They are most commonly used as pre filtration units to UF, RO, Nano Membranes. They trap the fine silt, suspended particles, sand, carbon and other media particles that escape from filters.
Bags of different micron rating can be connected in series to provided high quality effluent free of fine silt. Once the pressure drop exceeds the mark, the bag filters can be removed and washed, reused. They are comparatively cheaper to install and require zero maintenance.
AdvantagesActivated carbon filters are one of most popular and largely used filters world wide. The filters contain activated carbon in form of granules. The activated carbon is arranged in form of filtration bed in the filter. The carbon is supported by under bed media. The influent water flows down the activated carbon bed and is filtered of contaminants.
Activated carbon filters can remove chlorine from water, bio products of chlorination, oil and grease, volatile organic compounds, odor, color. The best thing about this filters is different type of carbon can be used to remove different types of contaminants from water.
ApplicationsDual Media Filters contain Anthracite and Sand in different proportions in addition to under bed support media. This filters are most commonly used when water has high concentration of suspended solids. Anthracite which has high dirt holding capacity, gives the filter long run with less back wash frequency. In addition to this these filters offer less pressure drop and are ideal choices for filtration post clarification, pre filtration to UF membranes, RO membranes.
ApplicationsMulti grade Sand Filters use different grades of similar media in fixed ratio. The use of similar media in different grades creates a bed with pores of different sizes. This helps in entrapment of the suspended particles in the media.
This filters can be operated at higher specific surface flow rates. Hence the size of the filters can be smaller and quality of effluent will be superior.
Applicationsmicron cartridge filters separate suspended solids, silt, fine dirt from water. Different types of cartridge materials are employed to filter the water based on applications. Pleated type, string wound, media filled cartridges and melt down cartridge are available. All these are available in different micron ratings. The micron ratings of these filters are in range of 100-1 micron. Based on the solids particle distribution, micron cartridge filters for particular applications are installed. They trap all the solids above the rated size. As all the pores in micron filters are filled up the pressure drop across the housing increases. Then the cartridges has to be cleaned or replaced.
