Tragacanth gum comes from a thorny shrub which is native to western Asia, Iraq, Iran and the Middle East. It is a tree gum like myrrh, frankincense and balm of Gilead, and can be used, along with the stems of the plant as incense. It comes from a number of Astragalus species, but the one which produces the best quality gum is Astragalus gummifer or gummifera.
Edible Gum is a natural edible gum. It is white or brown in colour. It provides heat to the body and is usually eaten in cold winter months. Edible gum is used in making panjiri mixture - whole-wheat flour, nuts, gaund, and sugar fried in ghee. It is used to make laddoos with mixture of coconut, dried dates, poppy seeds, almonds, jaggery fried in clarified butter. It is used to make chikkis ( mixture of edible gum and various nuts.
