Blue Silica Gel is also known as Self Indicating Silica Gel as it is prepared by impregnating White Silica gel with Cobalt Chloride present in a concentration of 0.5 to 1% weight for weight, an indicator, which provides the Blue color appearance. Self – Indicating Blue Silica Gel will absorb moisture in exactly the same way as standard non-indicating (white) silica gel but will actually indicate when they are becoming saturated by changing their color from blue to other color thus indicating that it has adsorbed moisture and needs to be replaced.

Silica gel is used to dry seed for long-term storage. It may also be used to dry flowers, certain food stuffs, cameras, tools, shoes, clothing, historical artifacts, display cases, and electronic instruments. It may be used to protect valuable items from mold, mildew, rust, and corrosion.

White silica gel will absorb moisture in exactly the same way as indicating (Blue) silica gel, but they will not indicate when they are becoming saturated by changing their color. It will remain white when they are becoming saturated. This is useful in fillers, catalysts supports, and absorbent dehydrating agent and as the buffing media in toothpaste.

When free from moisture the contaminants are dark orange. Once they are in use, the contaminants take up moisture, orange silica gel beads slowly turns orange to yellow & then to green and gives a ready indication that it has done or its loaded.
