An agent that kills a virus or that suppresses its ability to replicate and, hence, inhibits its capability to multiply and reproduce.
Valaciclovir is indicated for the treatment of HSV and VZV infections, including 1)Oral and genital herpes simplex (treatment and prophylaxis) 2) Reduction of HSV transmission from people with recurrent infection to uninfected individuals 3)Herpes zoster (shingles): the typical dosage for treatment of herpes is 1, 000 mg orally three times a day for seven consecutive days. 4)Prevention of cytomegalovirus following organ transplantation 5) Prophylaxis against herpesviruses in immunocompromised patients (such as patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy) It has shown promise as a treatment for infectious mononucleosis, and is preventively administered in suspected cases of herpes B virus exposure.
Vidarabine is an antiviral, active against herpes viruses, poxviruses, rhabdoviruses, hepadnaviruses and some RNA tumour viruses. A 3% ophthalmic ointment Vira-A is used in the treatment of acute keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent superficial keratitis caused by HSV-1 and HSV-2.Vidarabine is also used to treat herpes zoster in AIDS patients, reducing lesions formation and the duration of viral shedding. Many of the previous uses of vidarabine have been superseded by acyclovir, due to the hospitalisation required for intra venous dosing, and acyclovir has a higher selectivity, lower inhibitory concentration and higher potency. Toxic side effects are rare, but have been reported with high concentrations of vidarabine, such as nausea, vomiting, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia in patients receiving high intravenous doses daily.

Zanamivir is used for the treatment of infections caused by influenza a and influenza b viruses, but in otherwise-healthy individuals, benefits overall appear to be small. It decreases the risk of one's getting symptomatic, but not asymptomatic influenza. The combination of diagnostic uncertainty, the risk for virus strain resistance, possible side effects and financial cost outweigh the small benefits of zanamivir for the prophylaxis and treatment of healthy individuals.as of 2009, no influenza has shown any signs of resistance in the us.since then, genes expressing resistance to zanamivir were found in chinese people infected with avian influenza a h7n9 during treatment with zanamivir.

Zidovudine (zdv), also known as azidothymidine (azt), is an antiretroviral medication used to prevent and treat hivaids.azt has been used for post-exposure prophylaxis (pep) in combination with another antiretroviral drug called lamivudine. Together they work to substantially reduce the risk of hiv infection following the first single exposure to the virus.more recently, azt has been replaced by other antiretrovirals such as tenofovir to provide pep. Azt is now a principal part of the clinical pathway for both pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure treatment of mother-to-child transmission of hiv during pregnancy, labor, and delivery and has been proven to be integral to uninfected siblings' perinatal and neonatal development.without azt, as many as 10 to 15% of fetuses with hiv-infected mothers will themselves become infected.azt has been shown to reduce this risk to as little as 8% when given in a three-part regimen post-conception, delivery, and six weeks post-delivery. Consistent and proactive precautionary measures, such as the rigorous use of antiretroviral medications, cesarean section, face masks, heavy-duty rubber gloves, clinically segregated disposable diapers, and avoidance of mouth contact will further reduce child-attendant transmission of hiv to as little as 12%.
