In its pure state, it is a white flake or powdered crystal. The product is described as non-hazardous, though in its powdered form it can be prone to flash ignition (a typical risk in handling fine organic powders).
Aniline is an organic compound with the formula C6H5NH2. Consisting of a phenyl group attached to an amino group, aniline is the simplest aromatic amine. Its main use is in the manufacture of precursors to polyurethane and other industrial chemicals. Like most volatile amines, it has the odor of rotten fish.
It is used as a source of the chelating agent EDTA4-. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of approximately 11.3. When dissolved in neutral water, it converts partially to H2EDTA2-. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is produced commercially via the intermediacy of tetrasodium EDTA.
Malononitrile is relatively acidic, with a pKa of 11 in water.This allows it to be used in the Knoevenagel condensation, for example in the preparation of CS gas:
