ACSR is a concentrically stranded conductor composed of one or more layers of hard-drawn 1350H19 aluminum wire stranded with a high strength coated steel core. The core maybe single wire or stranded depending on the size. The proportions of aluminum and steel can be varied to obtain the relation between current-carrying capacity and mechanical strength best suited to each application. The Core of Conductor is made of galvanized steel wires drawn from high carbon steel rods. The No. of steel wire vary from 1 to 7. The other layers of Conductors are formed by hard drawn Aluminum Wires drawn from E.C. Grade Aluminum, successive layers containing 6, 12, 18, 24 wires depending upon size of Conductors.

Aluminum Alloy Conductor (AAAC) manufactured out of this aluminum alloy 6201 (minimum conductivity 54%), have a better corrosion resistance and a better strength to weight ratio. On an equal diameter basis AAAC conductors possess higher electrical conductivity than ACSR conductors. These conductors are designed to get better strength to weight ratio and offer improved electrical properties, excellent sag-tension characteristics, and superior corrosion resistance when compared with ACSR. As compared to a conventional ACSR conductor, the lighter weight, comparable strength & current carrying capacity, lower electrical losses and superior corrosion resistance have given AAAC a wide acceptance in the distribution and medium & high voltage transmission lines.

All Aluminium Conductors (AAC) are manufactured from electrolytically refined (E.C.Grade) aluminium, containing a minimum of 99.5% aluminium by weight. The aluminium used has a minimum conductivity of 61%. AAC conductors are used mainly in urban areas where the spacing between supports is small and thereby the supports are relatively closer to each other. All Aluminium Conductors are made up of one or more strands of aluminium wire depending on the required current carrying capacity and used specially as bus conductors at sub-stations. AAC conductors are also used extensively in coastal areas because they have a very high degree of corrosion resistance.
