The type of bar to use is an important consideration, since dowel bars need to last as long as the rest of the roadway. In this regard, the corrosion resistance of the dowel bars is a critical feature, depending on their exposure to moisture and climate conditions. Dowel bars are available made from a number of different materials, ranging from plain, uncoated steel to solid stainless steel. Some of the shapes are rounds, hexagons, flats, bars, etc. Due to the nature of the process and temperatures involved, precise control of tolerances that can be achieved in bright bars cannot be achieved in black steel bars. Therefore they are further processed to make steel bright bars for processes that require more precise accuracies. Therefore black steel bars are less expensive than bright bars.
