Compressed air filters, often referred to asline filters, are used to remove contaminates fromcompressed airafter compression has taken place.

Air leaving a standardscreworpistoncompressorwill generally have a highwatercontent, as well as a high concentration ofoiland other contaminants. There are many different types of filters, suitable for differentpneumaticsapplications.

Unfilteredcompressed airfrequently contains dust, oil, rust, moisture and other harmful substances, and therefore requires filtration. In the first stage of filtration, the compressed air passes through a tube-shaped mesh filter, which creates acoalescenceeffect. Here bigger particles areadsorbedon the filter and the water will condense into larger droplets, which can then pass into the separation chamber. The compressed air is slowed down, which makes the particles condense on ahoneycomb-like pad, allowing the water droplets to travel to the bottom of the drainage system and through an automatic or electric drain valve to the discharge. In the first filtration stage more than 95% of the water droplets, oil and large particles are removed. This practice is most common for removing water, but is also used for removing oil.In the second filtration stage the air is passed through fiber made of cotton, generating thousands of small vortices and accelerating the air.

Most baghouses use long, cylindrical bags (or tubes) made of woven or felted fabric as a filter medium. (For applications where there is relatively low dust loading and gas temperatures are 250F or less, pleated, nonwoven cartridges are sometimes used as filtering media instead of bags.)Dust-laden gas or air enters the baghouse through hoppers (large funnel-shaped containers used for storing and dispensing particulate) and is directed into the baghouse compartment. The gas is drawn through the bags, either on the inside or the outside depending on cleaning method, and a layer of dust accumulates on the filter media surface until air can no longer move through it. When sufficient pressure drop (delta P) occurs, the cleaning process begins. Cleaning can take place while the baghouse is online (filtering) or is offline (in isolation). When the compartment is clean, normal filtering resumes.
